    The very first Ryder Cup took place in 1927, but in those days the competition was between the USA and Great Britain, rather than Europe. The US won, though they had home advantage, playing at Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1979, the format changed so that the US played against Europe, making for a fairer contest.
