It depends on what you mean by Katana, if you mean a single edged sword, It's tough to tell, but if you mean the generally accepted nihonto sword, somewhere in the 1400s.

First swords were from China and Korea around the 300's AD.

First forged Japanese straight single edged were around 500's.

The first curved around mid-late 700's

Then they got their notification around the 1100's. Heian period.

around 1300's Kamakura period was the beginning of the Samurai and changes to the sword construction.

The katana as we know it came about in the late 1300's.
