Question:

When did the media become so schadenfreude?

It seems like most of the news being shoved down our throats is not even news worthy. I usually do a search in the AM on current events to keep myself informed. What comes up are the most unflattering pics of celebrities, followed by stories that harp on their drug & money problems or infidelities.

Has it always been this way?

  1. I think that when we as a society became infatuated with the trappings of the rich and famous we also found guilty pleasure in their drama and downfalls. There is a human component to hope that the mighty will fall. It's horrible and the words "celebrity" and "news" shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.

  2. because the people  like that the  drug, money and infidelities, especially money

  3. First off I had to look up to see what schadenfreude meant Good word for picking on the victim or someone way of life

I will have to use it a couple of time to see who knows its meaning

  4. I've often been amazed / frustrated / angry when the news covers something relatively trivial or local or "celeb" when there are really important things happening all over the world. A good example was yesterday morning when I put the news on (Sky) and for a full forty minutes I watched the Grand Pier at Weston Super Mare burn down. Literally, I watched the whole thing minute by minute and the news commentators kept dragging the mayor in or the chap from the National Association of Piers (or something) and a local fellow who lived near it.

Today? Oh, Amy Winehouse was taken into hospital for an allergic reaction (or something). But she's fine now.

You know, I honestly think it's all an attempt to distract us from the real problems in the world, to keep us all shopping and going to work and generally being "happy morons".

  5. well the media has always done satyrical cartoons of famous people making fun of them.

only difforence is now adays the media is far more widespread, so we see alot more of it

  6. News used  to be a public service that was broadcast as a source of information.  Now, ever since the advent of the 24 hour news station, news is broadcast as a means of creating revenue and pure unbiased information does not create as much revenue as Amy Winehouse.
