I'm doing a report on Egyptian Mummies, and I can't find a time period on when the idea of mummification first started. Do you guys have an idea on when they started the process?

  1. Based on recovered mummified bodies, the earliest known mummy was dated in the late pre-dynasty - approx. 33-3400 BC.  This was 'Ginger', and I have provided a link to a wikipedia writeout (second link).  It is uncertain whether this mummy was deliberately mummified.  The technique became more deliberate around 3000 BC onward.

  2. The oldest deliberate mummy is of a black toddler in Libya. It was found at Uan Muhuggiag. It's thought to be the fore rubber of the Egyptian mummification process. It's about 5,500 years old.
