In response to my earlier question on the Great western railway, I received a good answer. Since the source from which it is quoted is 1922; I would like to know the first date of operation (construction) for each of the sections the route from Birmingham to Bristol. I believe the Gloucester Warwick route was opened in 1899 but the other sections were constructed at much earlier dates.

  1. I do not know the exact date, but I did read it once. It was built by Brunell and other built it between 1824 & 1832 between Birmingham & Gloucester. See the below link ( I did try and find more for you)

  2. Bristol, to Gloucester c.1840  (Broad gauge)

Cheltenham to Birmingham finished 1908. (Standard Gauge)

Gloucester (via Cheltenham) to Birmingham (not GWR) c.1840 (Standard Gauge)

Dual gauge fitted between Gloucester and Cheltenham 1847.

Can recommend excellent book on Birmingham & Gloucester Railway by Awdry and Long.

(The Awdry was the late Rev W. Awdry of Thomas the Tank Engine fame, who was also an expert on Gloucester Railways).
