  1. There was still fighting going on when the Japanese surrendered August 15, 1945, on Luzon in particular.  There were still 115,000 Japanese troops in the Philippines.

    Some of these hid in the jungle and did not come out for a long time.  There were small groups which continued to prey on local farmers, who eventually had to organize and hunt many of these down.  One finally surrendered in 1974 on Lubang Island.  Many Filipinos wanted him tried for murder, for farmers he had killed after he should have known absolutely the war was over, but he was allowed to return to Japan.  The last holdout surrendered in 1980.
