  1. brian c - why is it a "secret" document? The real question should be when did they start calling people's first name their Christian name...

The answer is of course easy - Christian converts used to take on the name of famous Christians or other Biblical characters whom the aspired to or wished to eminate -

The notion of changing one's name exists in many cultures and usually involves a right-of-passage at a certain point in a person's life......

You have the name your parents gave you - then in adulthood you choose your own name or something like that....

That's why lots of Muslims go by different names - Jews have Bar/Bat Mitzvah - (some) Christians have confirmation names whereby they pick the name of a Saint whom they aspire to be like and so on...

But the Christian name thing points to the fact that only about 25% of people in the world are called Christians (and probably significantly less actually pratise Christianity)

  2. When someone in their Ivory Tower realised at long last, not everyone is a Christian

  3. its all about being politically correct. there was a secret document sent out from brussells mentioning that companies etc cannot take peoples religion as granted.

  4. and how old are you????

  5. Because not everybody is a Christian.  I personally resented being told to use my "Christian name" because I'm not religious.  Some people don't care but I'm happy it's not used any more.

  6. because not everyone is Christian, and christianity  is in decline (YAY!)

  7. I do believe 'they' (who are these people?) thought it was politically incorrect to keep the former and so changed it to the latter. Personally I still call it a Christian name and I'm not even a little bit religious. Whenever someone tells me it's not right I just bite back and say it's tradition.

  8. It's not PC to assume everyone is a christian. What a load of old bolloc*s

  9. Not sure.  I never noticed that .

  10. when they realised its not 'pc' probably, gotta be careful these days and mindful of everyones feelings apparently!

  11. Don't ever remember it being Christian Name. Maybe people were confused by the question and this is easier.

  12. When they realised that not everyone is a christian.

I don't think there was a specific time, it has just been done gradually.

  13. When Labour came into power!
