The concept of a canal that crosses  Panama dates back to the early 16th century. But the first attempt to construct a canal began in 1880 under the French company who successfully built the Suez Canal.

The French attempt failed and 21,900 people who were working on the canal died. The project was finished by the United States' Army Corp of Engineers in 1914.
