  1. Ummm...

    Transpiration is the movement of water through a plant.  It is not and never has been dependent on gas or diesel.  

    Transportation of goods and services (if that is where your question meant to go) started to become dependent upon gasoline and diesel engines in the early 20th Century.  Most coal fired boilers (on trains and ships) were obsolete by the 1940's .... internal combustion engines simply worked better than their boiler based, steam-powered counterparts and were favored for the ease with which they could be refueled (liquid fuel is easier to handle than coal).
