  1. I had my first pelvic exam at 36 weeks and was only 0.5cm and slightly soft cervix.  I didn't have my next exam until 38 weeks and was 1cm dilated and 50% effaced.  All women are different.  Some don't dilate at all and then boom, the last week they're at 5cm and some start out at 2cm in week 36 and never progress.

Most women will start to dialte at 36 weeks.

  2. I started dilating at 36 weeks. I was dilated to 2cm. By the time I was 38 weeks I was 4 cm. dilated and 100% effaced. But unfortunately I did not go into labor. I had a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks.

  3. with my son, I was less than a fingertip dilated and barely beginning to efface and soften at 39 weeks (which was the first time my midwife checked), 3 days later I went into labor, I was 8 cm dilated by the time I got to the hospital and delivered an hour and a half later (5 hours labor total); he was a quick one.

with my daughter: I was 1cm dilated, 50% effaced at 35 weeks (I might have been dilated before then, but that was the first time my midwife checked because I was spotting alot that week), at 36 weeks I was 2cm, 80% effaced, at 37 weeks I was 3 centimeters, 90% effaced- at this point, I was starting to think "ok, at one centimeter a week, that means I'll deliver in two more months at 44weeks, no!!"  fortunately  I went into labor a few days later (at 37 weeks)
