I've been watching those nanny shows ( nanny 911 and super nanny)and I've notice they frown upon sippy cups after 3 years old.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and drinks from one and I was just wondering when did you ladies stopped the sippy cup with your children?

Thanks!

  1. It's time. I got rid of them at age two but you're within a reasonable time frame. I think that people often don't think about it but a sippy cup is meant to be a tool the eases the transition from bottle to cup. They're a fairly new product and certainly not something necessary.

Sit her down at the kitchen table when she has something to drink and use a regular cup or glass. She'll be fine!

  2. around 3 31/2, depending on how I felt about cleaning up spilled juice that day

  3. My son will be three in October. He can use a regular cup, but if we are in the car, I take one. He actually ASKS for one sometimes because he doesn't like to spill.

I really don't see the difference in a sippy and the cups we get at a fast food restaurant with a straw. The important thing is that the child knows HOW to use a regular cup. I take a bottle with a spout to work. I don't see the difference.

  4. At the childcare center where I work, our kids just started using regular cups at the age of 19-24 months.  But one of my cousins used one until she was about 4 (which I think is way too old).  I'd say that by about 2, kids should be using regular cups sometimes, and the sippy cups should be gone by age 3.

  5. Whenever you think your daughter can hold a regular cup without spilling it, then she's ready. I don't think there should be a set age for that. All of my brothers have been around 5 when they started drinking without a lid.

  6. My son turn 3 years old on March and he stop on June and

he can use a regular cup.

  7. I stop when my daughter  was 2 1/2

  8. 18 months at meal times

he's now 2 1/2 and still uses one if he has a drink while playing in the house or watching tv or in the car.  (too messy to be honest)

he doesn't seem to notice that we give him different types of cups at times.

  9. My grandma always told me that my son was fast, but he stopped using his on his own and he was 1 1/2.

  10. Let's be honest... sippy cups are for the convenience of Moms.  It means we don't have to constantly clean up spilled drinks, and it is a convenient way to pack along a drink when you're out and about.

I do think that by age 3 the child should be able to use a proper cup while having meals or when Mom can supervise, but using the sippy cup after age 3 is okay when it means making life a little easier on Mom.

  11. We still use one @ night for water. My daughter has a loft bed, and rather than having her running up and down the ladder all night for "one more drink," we have a sippy cup half full of water tucked in the corner of her bed. Totally about convenience. For all of us :) She hasn't used one at the table since she was 2, but does carry a sports bottle in the bike trailer & at soccer (again, less spillage :) )

The first little bit of the transition from sippy cup to regular cup is the worst... I think it's because sippy cups end up getting tipped upside down so often... takes a few times to remember that tipping a regular cup upside down is a soggy business.

Skip the juice in the regular cup, and use water until she gets it -- much easier to clean up :)

  12. I stop when my kids could not spill from a cup. My at times my four year old have a sippy cup but during winter time if I am driving to his doctor appointment which is an hour drive and he gets sick a lot.. But he doesn't get any more sippy cups. I stop at the age of four.

  13. My daughter, who will be 3 in October, is on her way toward ending the sippy cups.  She uses an open cup at mealtimes now.  But when she is not at the table, she still gets the sippy.  And of course, we'll probably continue to use the sippy in the car for a long time.  But as far as at home, my guess is she will be entirely off the sippy within the next year  :)

  14. I'm 33 and drink my coffee from a travel mug. It's the same concept.  I say who cares what anyone thinks. Kids use cups with lids and straws when they go out to eat, right? If someone tells you what cup to use, tell them where they can stick that cup.

Of course, your child should start learning how to drink from a regular cup. But no harm no foul if she's drinking red kool-aid and you put it in a sippy cup.

I'm sure extended use won't send her to a tower sniping innocent victims. Don't listen to these sensationalists. Just go with it.
