When did you take away the bottle?

How old was your baby when he/she stopped havig the bottle? My daughter will be one in 1 week and thought of taking it away scares the c**p out of me. Not only bc of her crying but also bc I'm scared she won't get her proper nutrients. She still doesn't have any teeth and I'm not sure she is eating enough 'food' to not have formula.

  1. Luckily, my daughter took herself off the bottle, so I didn't have to worry about it. She was 11 months and decided she no longer wanted it. If your daughter is eating all of the daily food groups, then she'll be just fine without formula.

  2. Doesn't have to have teeth to have 'food.' They usually get their front teeth first, but even when that happens you chew with your molars, not your front teeth. My baby just turned 1 last Friday and he only has his front teeth. He gets his food broken apart with his back gums and his tongue. Just give him foods that you know can be easily mashed with the gums.

After 1 year formula is not going to provide for your daughter nearly as much as food will. Food becomes their primary source of nutrients and vitamins. Not saying that giving them formula past 1 year old is harmful at all, unless it is still the primary source of nutrients and vitamins.

Rule of thumb, as long as your baby continues to gain weight/ and or doesn't lose weight, they are getting the nutrients and vitamins that they need to survive.

    Easy transition foods:

-Mashed potatos - the more practice they get, the lumpier you can make them.

-Mac and Cheese - make the pieces small enough so that it gives her something to mush/break apart, but also won't be easy to choke on. Any pasta is good because it is soft enough for the gums to chew apart.

-Soft fruits such as bananas, peaches, and pears

-Steam vegetables until they are soft, even mushy

-Meats: Chicken, Beef, whatever your having. Just tear off small enough pieces to where even if they don't chew it they could swallow it so that they get practice and familiarized with these tastes.

Don't worry I was where you are about a month ago, I was so scared that he was going to choke, and a couple of times he did. But that's expected with a learning baby.

FYI - My baby is weaning onto whole milk, but he probably wont be off of the bottle anytime soon. :)

  4. i took my daughters bottle away at 1, she had 2 teeth and did perfectly fine with eating and drinking milk, she was and has stayed perfectly healthy. if her not having any teeth is the only thing keeping you from taking it, then don't worry she can eat soft foods and eat the gerber graduate meals just fine

  5. Don't feel that you have to take her off the bottle if you don't want to. I've noticed on YA that it seems to be a set rule that you have to get your baby off the bottle by the time they're 1 but honestly this is a lot of nonsense. People tell you that bottles damage teeth but you don't need to worry about this if your daughter doesn't have teeth yet.

My son is 14 months old, he has 4 teeth and he still has a bottle. It isn't doing him any harm.

  6. Hi!

I gave my daughter bottle till she was 18 months.

After that I gave her bottle & sippycup & when she transitioned to sippycup I stopped using the bottle.

My sister-in-law gave her daughter bottle till she was 21/2.

Don't worry! she'll let u know when she's done with the bottle.Just buy her a sippycup & let her play with it,give her milk, cheerios in it & she'll get the message:)

Infants-toddlers are VERY smart that way.

Mine said "no" & shook her head when I gave her bottle that last day:) ^ picked up her Sippy

    Hope that helps

  7. If your baby isn't on milk yet then you should start supplementing it into your formula. You can try to use sippy cups now. My daughter is 8 months and I already have her using one so it isn't too early. But if you aren't giving your baby solid foods yet, then I wouldn't take away the formula until they are. Good Luck.
