  1. Hello Emily.   Interesting question...  deserves a * . OK....  The All State Tryouts are UIL... and UIL begins in high school...  In our state (Texas) that is 9th grade.    All State is a process.  You cannot just try out for All State.   You must go through the process by first winning a chair in all city... which in turn takes you to the Region competitions.  If you win one of the top 5 chairs in Region...  you qualify for Area Tryouts .   Going on to Area... If you make one of the 1st 5 chairs.... you qualify for State.  At State Tryouts... you actually tryout for the chairs in which you will be playing in one of the All State Orchestras of which there are Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras.   That is the process.    If I were your teacher, I would begin to get you ready for competition as early as possible,  even if you were not 100% ready... as this gives you experience in what goes on and what to expect.   The further you get the first year... the more you know what you will have to do  - how hard you will have to work to make it the next year.   I hope I was able to explain it clearly enough for you to understand.    I am qualified to train musicians to compete for Regionals.  I have had a number of All State Players, including my daughter.    Let being an All State Player be one of your goals and dreams.  It is an awesome and memorable experience.  :))

  2. All State is pretty tough. But with enough practice, you can make it.

For me at my school, all state auditions started in high school. So the youngest in this case was being a freshman. I didn't try out though.

However, just one person in my band made All State. And she was a freshman.

I don't know if you can audition before high school. If not, then high school is a good time.

  3. In NYS, you have to be in 10th or 11th grade to try out through NYSSMA.
