My son is 18 months old and he has a vocabulry of about 10-15 words but he babbles a ton!! He is very active and very smart. He'll immitate anyone and if you tell him to do something specific he definatly understands. His constant babbling leads me to believe he will start talking soon but right now its 10-15 different words and only when he wants to say them. Just curious when your children starting to speak

  1. I think is usual for a boy, because my son did the same: it's different for girls: they speak better and fast really soon, about one year old

  2. My oldest niece started speaking at about 10 months, but my younger niece didn't start speaking until she was about 13 months.  Each child is different and reacts different to their environments.  I have a cousin who did not really start to speak until he was 24 months.  My aunt was scared, but all testing showed he was perfectly fine, he just didn't want to talk.  If you talk with him in plain speech, not baby talk, he will be fine.

  3. My daughter started to talk at about ten months.  By a year, she said about ten words (mostly animals).  I hear that girls tend to talk faster than boys and what number he is in the birth order can have an effect as well.  Firsts tend to talk earlier and the later ones a bit later.  If he understands what you are saying and seems interested in communicating, I would just wait for the conversations to begin.  He is not late by any means, I know kids who have been quiet til they were three.
