  1. They'll actually need both.

The cable outlet is for the TV signal from the satellite dish.

The phone line is so your receiver can "phone home" to download the TV guide data, as well as let you buy pay-per-view programming.  Some tuners/DVRs now have ethernet, so if it's easier for you to connect the tuner/DVR to your computer network instead of a phone jack, you can do that.

  2. Wrong to both answers above.  No phone line is required - you don't need one.  The phone line is only needed to order PPV from on screen, which you should call in or do online anyway, so all of the receivers can get the movie  - INSTRUCTIONS FROM MY DIRECTV INSTALLER.  I don't have any phone lines connected to any of my receivers.

And I don't pay anything extra.

  3. They do use both but you do have the option for them not to use your phone line. I did this because I did not have a land line in my house and refused to get one just for them. I had to pay an extra $5 per month per box for them to hook up the boxes without a land line phone.

Do not think you don't have a choice. It is more expensive not to have it hooked to a phone line. It would have been too much money for me to get a phone in my house just for them though. Good Luck!
