Question:

When do Hungarian celebrate their national day?

I've looked on wikipedia and found that

- the 15th of March is defined a national day in Hungary and celebrates something related to the revolution in 1848

- the 20th of August is the most important national day in Hungary - they celebrate Saint Stephen

- the 23rd of October is the national day since 1989 and it celebrates both the success of 1989 revolution as well as something else in 1956

Since I've never seen a country to have three national days, I've changed the search criteria to "National Day". I've got an alphabetical list of counties and their national days....except for Hungary, all the three days were enumerated.

I'm confuse. So I ask you.....Which of those three is the real national day of Hungary?

  1. Well, everyone celebrates Saint Stephen day very heartily, but they almost split in which day is the national day, while most celebrate the 15th of March, some celebrate the 23rd of October

  2. Hungary really does have three different "national days". All three are celebrated equally; they just have slightly different focuses. March tends to be speeches and wreath-layings, August has processions and fireworks, and October is back to speeches and wreaths and commemorative assemblies.

Hungary is not alone in this proliferation: Britain doesn't really have a single day equivalent to the USA's Independence Day. I think it's what happens when a country has been around a long time, with a turbulent history.
