Question:

When do I know when my sweet corn is ready?

It was planted in last week of may and is about 6 1/2 feet tall.

  1. Find a husk that appears to be full, open it and look...yep, it is that simple.


  2. The silk will start to brown a little at the tips.  You can peel back the husks a bit to check the kernels.  If they are filled out and there is a milky juice when you pierce a kernel with your fingernail, it's ready.  If no juice, the kernels are too starchy and mature, but it makes great corn relish.  The raccoons may get the corn before you do, if you have them.  Experts at finding ripe corn.

  3. Taste it. Raw corn will taste sweet.

  4. Yup, when the silks start to turn brown and shrivel.
