My oak tree is about 3 years old and it grew 2 acorns, as far as I can see, this summer and I didn't think they were supposed to grow that young. Why or what is going on?

  1. Oak trees can start producing acorns when they are 20 years old, but sometimes can go all the way to 50 years for the first production. By the time the tree is 70 to 80 years old it will produce thousands of acorns. Here is a website you might find interesting.

  2. Oaks grow slowly and usually do not bear acorns until they are about 20 years old. But these trees live a long time. Most oaks live for 200 to 400 years.

In a nursery setting it is possible for acorns to form after about 10 years.   Maybe the tree you acquired had been in a nursery longer than you realized.

  3. genotypic variation. no two trees are the same and apparently you have a very precocious oak, just try to keep its skirt from going up over it's head until it learns to behave itself
