Lions dont really cough it is called chuffing. It sounds like they are coughing but they are not. They do it to call to each other or to to other lions (mostly nomads) that it is there territory.

A lion will cough if it has a respiratory infection or has something stuck in its throat, just like you or me. When roaring, the long roars often degenerate into short grunting sounds that resemble coughs before the lion ceases roaring - this is not actually coughing, though.
