At 3 or 4? Do kids really need two years of preschool before kindergarten? Seems like a bit much at times.

  1. Yeh you do because my friend use to go there and hes in kindergarden now :)

  2. the same time as girls

  3. Where I live in NJ they have a pre-school program in the high school for seniors to earn extra credits.  2 1/2 hours a day 2 days a week.  The only requirement is that your 3 & potty trained. No cost to attend as long as you live in the town.

  4. Preschool is definitely not a requirement at any age. If your son is not in daycare or in a setting around other children it is always nice to have that extra year of socialization and being used to being away from mom and dad, not to mention the time for mom!  As a center director I always tell parents that is is ultimately their call.  If they feel their child is ready and have the money to do a part time preschool option it will never hurt the child.  Our center and all centers should be based on the fact that children learn through play.  Although our day is structured and on a schedule we definitely do most of our learning through play and fun!  As a former Kindergarten teacher, you can surely tell which of your students attended preschool and which did not.  Not that this is a bad thing, because being at home can be just as beneficial, but being in the school setting for at least a year helps children with maturity and socialization in the school setting.  Hope this helps!

  5. The expectations in Kindergarten are more than they used to be when I went to school.  The children should know how to write their full name, addresse and phone number.  They should know their colors, numbers and shapes.  They should be able to recognize some simple words (most are in the Dr. Seuss series of words).  By the end of Kindergarten they are expected to know how to read.

  6. Pre-K is good for getting 4 year olds ready for Kindergarten but its not required.  My daughter has been in daycare since she was born, so she did preschool when she was 3, Pre-K when she was 4, then Kindergarten at 5.  That worked best for us, but it is certainly not required if your child is in an environment now that works for him.  The idea behind Kindergarten is the transition between being home and more formal schooling, so there's no need for anything before that if you don't want.

  7. It really depends on your child and in your family in general.  Preschool is for socialization mostly and this comes a little harder with boys, in general (and I'm saying this knowing there can be exceptions...my son being one of them...he has never had an issue with the social-emotional side.  :-))

I recommend at least one year of preschool (4yrs) but children who will be "young 5s" when they enter into Kindergarten tend to do better with 2 years of preschool.  Good luck in your decision making!

  8. it is normally between the age of 3 1/2 - 4 1/2. i started when i was 4 1/2 and i have a november birthday so i was considered old for my school year (which begins in september in the UK)

i found preschool is very helpful and necessary to build basic social skills before kindergarten.

  9. Um..I thought it was just one year?

  10. depends on the curriculum - our program is geared for two years before kindergarten but it's not a repeat year. the first year is for self-reliance, sitting still, sharing, self-control, etc.  We add short skill sheets after the first of the year.

The second year is more kindergarten readiness with skill sheets, crafts and more free choices.

  11. the reason why they go for 2 years isn't necessarily for the education.. more to learn how to socialize with other children and adults. Also, it's a critical time for children to learn how to problem solve.

  12. Hello,

No they do not need preschool.

By reading with your child and exposing him to art and math and such which is real easy he can start school when it is time without him being behind.

These "preschools" were started for the poor working class so there children would have the same opportunity's as the "richer" kids. This was also why Sesame Street was started on public tv, that is for every child to get a head start for school.

My mother is a teacher of over  30 years at a private Christian school where they too have a kindergarten class. There preschool is open to any and all children who are out of diapers. I could not afford to send my children (though my mother has taught there so long) and they were always right there with the other kids at that age.

    Wish you well!
