Just like other animals, some are nocturnal, some diurnal, and some crepuscular. As many sports fishermen know, there are certain times of day that certain species bite. One can assume that they are sleeping when they aren't biting.

Fish don't sleep, they rest -  swim slower.

at night or when they are tired, usually I turn out the lights and they usually settle to the bottom and swim real slow, actually they really aren't swimming, but keeping themselves balanced at the bottom.

Most all fish spend time in an energy-saving state that can be called

"rest", and we might even call their behavior "sleep", though it is probably

different than "sleep" in most land

animals.  Many fish, like Bass and perch, rest on or under logs at

night.  Coral reef fish active in the day, hide and rest in crevices

and cracks in the reef to avoid being eaten at night.

The resting behavior of fish is very different from their behavior the

rest of the day. Many minnows, for example, which are very active in

schools during the day, scatter and remain motionless in shallow

water at night.  Many fish "rest" or "sleep" during the day and are

active at night instead, but almost all fish sleep.

My cichlids and my Cardinal Tetras (different tanks) sleep when the light goes off.  I have some fish that are so energetic I don't think they ever sleep.. i.e. Giant Danios (yet another tank) and some tetras.  I have a pleco, two African Clawed Frogs and a Kuhlie loach that seem to be more active at night.  It really depends on the fish!
