  1. Hello,

    Good question--- and a relly hard oone to explain.. German is so complicated that my boyfriend even thinks it is a crazy language!

    Zum - is used for male words

    Zur -  female words

    Zu -   non gender

    examples:

    Nehmen Sie die U-Bahn zum Bahnhof.

    Take the underground to the station.

    Wie komme ich zur Messe?

    How do I get to the fair?

    Zum is the contracted form of zu dem...

    Zur is the contracted form of zu der...

    --------------------------------------...

    To state the destination, you can use nach or zu.

    n most other cases you use zu. Zu changes according to the word that follows it.

    With die words, zu changes to zur, which is short for zu + der, to the:

  2. If you get confused with Zum and Zur just stick with zu, it's not a huge deal.  But here is my explanation.  Zu is a preposition that requires something called the dative case.  In the datative case your der, die, and das change to dem, der, and dem respectively.  Zum and Zur are contractions of zu + dem and zu + der- they can be used whenever you want to say zu dem or zu der. It is like us changing "we are" to "we're" or something similar.  So if you can't get the hang of the contractions its perfectly fine to say "zu dem Bahnhof."

    Good luck!

  3. I don't think in these regards german is so complicated. The words "zum" or "zur" are just a commonly used short form of "zu dem" resp. "zu der" - also "zu einem" resp. "zu einer" (it's called bestimmter Artikel (der) or unbestimmter Artikel (einer)). You can use the long form anyway, that's grammatically correct. It's like "isn't" in English, you can always say "is not" - everybody will understand although the short form is usually preferred in either case.

  4. zu=to

    zur=to.towards

    zum= to the ,towards the

    it is too(zu) much...es ist zu viel

    i am heading to(zur)work....ich gehe zur arbeit (i go to the work)

    until(zum) next time..bis zum naechsten mal...until to the next time

    there are so many ways to use those words and i am not 100% i have told you correctly but i enjoyed trying any way
