  1. my little cousin is 2 1/2 years old and he cant even speak! thats impossible to read at age 2. kids start reading at like age 4 or 5

  2. Two is very good. A little unbeleivable actually. Maybe you were just starting your letters at two and picked up fast? Really fast!

Most children start seriously reading in kindergarten (age 5).

It all depend on the presonality of the child. I started to read when I was 3. My mom says that I really wanted to and she just bought me books, worked with me and I started reading. My sister on the other hand was very lazy. My mother practically had to force her to read when she got into kindergarten. Every kid is different.

  3. most american kids start around age 2 or 3, but in the south they start around 25 or 26.

  4. my son has always been an 'above average' learner, (now 13) and he couldnt read til he was 4.

However, my 2.5yr old memorises books, maybe thats what you did, which they class as stage 1 of reading - and that is pretty darn good.

But if you mean - go to the library and pick a book off the shelf that the 2 yr old has never seen b4 and starts reading it - i dont think so!

  5. My daughters are 4 1/2 and both have been reading for about 8 months or so.

  6. 2 is pretty impressive. I guess it depends on the parent and if they are teaching their child, and also on how the child learns. I'd say anywhere from about 4-6 years old is about average.

  7. It all depends on the child and the amount of schooling he receives.

I am a teacher, so I've been working with my son since he was 1 (colors, shapes, etc.).  By the time he was 3, he knew all of his letters and then learned their sounds.  Once he had those sounds, he was able to blend them together to sound out words.  He also loves to read and learn, so it was easy for him and me!  He started reading just before he turned 4.

My son also went to a private school where they teach the kids to read beginning in pre-k (ages 4-5).  However, most children really do not start reading until they reach kindergarten or first grade (ages 5-6).  Therefore, I would say that age 5 is probably the typical age when children begin reading.

Two years old is a little young to be reading.  I have a friend whose son is profoundly gifted and he started reading at 2, but this is extremely rare.
