When do most schools complete their hiring?

I'm trying to get into teaching, and have sent out several resumes without a response. School where I live doesn't start until mid-August, but I was wondering when most schools complete hiring for the coming year. When do I start worrying about not hearing something? Thanks for your feedback!

  1. Get your resume in just after the winter break.  Make your resume a creative one so it stand out.  However, don't get too clever!

Follow up your resume in a week or two with a phone call!  Try and get "friendly" with someone in the personnel office.  Tell them how much you'd like to teach in that school district and so on.

If you feel or see that your efforts aren't "paying off," go on to another school district.  No use pursuing a position that isn't there or that you won't get.

    Good luck and be persistent!

  2. There can be changes up until the first week of school.  After four days of the first week we had a teacher accept a new pilot position in the district so we had to hire over labor day weekend.  Most are finished in July/ early August around here.  For tutor positions they may even be up until the week before school.

  3. Schools start the hiring process in the spring and it continues until all positions are filled.  Since there are usually some who leave at the end of the school year and even over the summer it is not too late.  However, I suggest that you visit the schools in person and talk to an administrator.

  4. A few  things come into play...where I teach teachers have until July 10 to resign or retire their position so that can delay the process. In fact it can be done after that date if the board allows them out of their contract. Hiring begins in the spring and continues until the last position is filled.

Your area of certification can make a difference...here special ed. high school math and science are in demand.  Other areas are more difficult such as English, etc.

Some of the more competitive schools look for people with experience, but on the other hand you are not  as expensive and that can be in your favor! Some of the best teachers get hired late. Good luck!

  5. Schools will continue to hire, even after the school year has started.  DON'T PANIC!!!

I was hired as a new teacher in the fall of 2006.  Everyone told me "don't worry, teachers are in high demand."  I delivered nearly 50 resumes in 5 counties throughout Middle Tennessee.  I had a few interviews early in the summer, with no luck of getting hired.  I followed up on the interviews with no luck.  I had a few really good interviews and a couple of principals flat out told me that they have interviewed a few other teachers already with more experience, a winning coaching record, etc.  but they would pass the word on to some other principals within the school system.  A few weeks later, I had 4 interviews in a week and a half.  The Friday before school started I interviewed at a school I had tutored at during college, and 4 hours later, after they contacted my references, I was hired.  The ironic thing was, after I was hired, I had received 3 phone calls from other schools.  two schools wanted to interview me (keep in mind school had already started) and the school I had interviewed with at the beginning of the summer had called me, wanting to give me a teaching position (although their call was a little too late.)

The point I'm wanting to make is to not get discouraged.  As long as you are not super picky and only have 1 or 2 schools that you'll teach at and no where else will do, you'll get hired.  Last year, I saw several more teachers get hired in at the last second, due to other tenured teachers leaving for new coaching opportunities or other careers.

Good luck and please don't get discouraged like I did.  I had another job lined up already because I thought it was too late in the summer to get hired.  You will get hired.  Update us on here and let us know when you get your first teaching job!
