  1. Weeds are weeds because they are not very picky about when to reproduce, and they can survive tough conditions. Remember, even if you pluck out all the weeds by hand in your garden, more seeds will come floating in the air from your neighbor's yard and from all over the place.

I have had fairly good success with a double-attack approach. In late winter, apply pre-emergent weed control. This comes mixed with lawn fertilizer. Sometime around early to mid May, (you will still see weeds growing), apply a post emergent weed control - this is available separately (applied with water) or mixed with fertilizer.

If your weed problem is really serious, you may need one more application in mid summer.

If you do this the first year, you will see significant improvements from the next year. You should then be able settle down with the late winter-mid May routine every year.

  2. Weeds can seed in the spring, summer and fall.

The worst ones are the annuals as they reproduce by seed.  Once you pull out a perennial it's gone UNLESS it can reproduce by its own root pieces or rhizomes.

Here in AZ I'm always pulling out tumbleweeds, bindweed and sap thistle.

  3. Weeds germinate all year!  Spring, summer, and winter.  If you want to break the cycle, apply a pre-emergent herbicide.  This chemical is embedded in the fertilizer granule and releases into the soil when watered-in.  If applied correctly, it will keep most weeds from germinating for 4-6 MONTHS.  In otherwords, if you apply this material in the spring and the fall, you won't have any weeds.
