I started my first job back in february and filled out a tax form so that my pay wouldn't get taxed, because im in full time education and im under 18, but i still haven't had it returned??? since then i've had 3 wage slips that are still getting taxed, and i will get my 4th wage slip tomorow, how long will it take for it to be returned as i think it is about £450 and i really need the money soon,?!?!

  1. Your tax is based on "if you earned this much every week/month for a year". The fact you are in full time education is irrelevant. The tax-man isn't psychic (as I assume you won't have this job forever). You won't be able to claim it back until you have left the job. And then you'll only be able to claim it back (or a proportion) if you've earned under your personal tax allowance.

  2. As the other person said, it's irrelevant that you're in full time education/under 18 - anyone who earns over a certain amount pays tax - even babies!!

I'm thinking that because this is your first job and you have worked there since the beginning of this tax year (April) you should be on the right tax code.

I would advise you to give the Inland Revenue a call to tell them that this is your only job and to check if you are on the correct tax code.

If you are currently on the incorrect tax code they can send a new correct code to your employer who will change it for you. Once this is in place - if you have been overtaxed you will receive a refund through your wages.

    Hope this helps!

  3. wow you have been paid 3 times and you think you have paid in around £450 you must be on a dam good wage to have paid that much tax in just 3 wages.

im not sure but i think you will get it back at the end of the financial year so around next March

  4. You might have to make a few calls and chase this.

Speak to the accounts department if your job has one, ask them if there's any checking they can do.

Phone the inland revenue and check that your form has been received, and what the process is for returning the money.

Unless you demand the money back, it might end up as a 'credit' on your national insurance number, which will get returned to you slowly in the form of being under-taxed for a while when you pass 18 years old. If you need it back as a cheque or direct bank account credit you might need to chase it.

  5. You are not exempt from tax, either because you are under 18, or you are a student.

If you are in full-time education, and only work at vacation time earning under the personal allowance limit, you can complete form P38S, but it seems that your employment is regular throughout the year, even if part-time. So you will be treated as an ordinary employee. Was that the form you filled in, or was it form P46, which is form for all new employees without a form P45? You can earn £5435 per annum before tax, and your employer should be using code 543L. Is he? You can check deductions at www.listentotaxman.

You may be entitled to a refund for the last tax year if you started work in February, as you will have a backlog of tax allowance. Send form P60 to tax office, with letter explaining you were previously in full-time education only, and ask for any refund due to be paid to you. If employer using wrong code, this is the time to ask for a correct code number to be sent to him.
