  1. Probably close to Thanksgiving, as it is that weekend and after that the xmas rush takes place.

You might want to start applying in early November. If you apply too early, your application may get buried or lost as many more come in closer to the holidays.

Or you can apply in October, then call them in early November and get your name back on their mind, find out when they'll start hiring for the holidays, and that you are still interested.

Follow-up calls are a good thing, and let them know you are serious.

As for how many hours, you tell them how many hours you can work and when. Nights and weekends tend to be when they are busiest, and have the most trouble getting help (most people want to work days, and have weekends off).

  2. Some retailers DO hire earlier...October.  Halloween stores, toy stores etc.  Many are getting their freight "build up" in October and need more bodies to help stock and unload freight.  You may not get 40 hours at all (sorry) as most retailers will hire more bodies and give a few hours to each.  As the season approaches and people drop out or have attendance issues, you may get more if you are flexible and answer for emergency call ins.

As you apply, make sure you speak to a MANAGER and ask those questions.  Start with larger department stores and "seasonal" stores and be persistent, stopping in each time you are in the area.  They will remember you when they start their interviewing if you smile and are eager!

  3. right after thanksgivngs and most will want at least 40 hours a week!!!
