It's on two channels all day here in Oz, and every other channel mentions it every 5 min.

-no escape downunder, I think my country is literally sports mad.

It is over on August 24 during the Closing ceremonies on Sunday night (August 24).

It is officially over when the olympic flame is put out, the oral declaration of the official closing of the games is announced, and the Olympic flag is lowered and exits the Bird's Nest (the olympic stadium's name).

It is informally over when a grand fireworks display lights up the Bird's nest for the last time after the torch is out....which is likely to happen, because the Chinese started everyone's fascination for fireworks.

But the Olympics start again in 2 years in the winter in Vancouver, Canada.
