When do they announce the September call-ups?

Sept 1st.  Going to each team's site like on here, I would imagine list all of the transactions including call ups from the minors.  

Many times teams seriously in contention with the World Series as a goal do not seem to bother much with September call ups other than to have them sit on the bench as a September call up, unless there is an injury need for a replacement, will not be used down the stretch and into the playoffs.

The expected moves for my Red Sox

Boston will call up C David Ross and P Bartolo Colon today

When Pawtucket's season ends they'll likely call up a forth catcher likely George Kotteras but possibly Dusty Brown

And one reliever likely Kyle Snyder or Chris Smith or even Hunter Jones

Joe Thurston was expected but was designated for assaignment this weekend

The Sox may also add an outfielder. Veteran Jason Lane seems the most likely however the addition of Mark Kotsay affects him. Jonathan Van Every and Chris Carter are also options

If the team adds an infielder it's likely Keith Ginter or Josh Wilson.

Honestly, I have no idea. Hopefully today we can find out who is coming up. If I recall you are a huge Cubby fan and you should be excited to see Micah Hoffpauir coming up this week. He hit 4 homeruns in a game 2 weeks ago!

Edit: I was just on the Cubs website and in this article it says that Cubs will call up Micah Hoffpauir, Koyie Hill, Michael Wuertz and Casey McGehee from Triple-A Iowa, and activate Jon Lieber and Angel Guzman from the disabled list. Also, Rich Hill has just been called up and placed on the 15-Day DL.

Ever since Hoffpauir was sent back down to the minors he has been hitting .387 with 12 HR, 10 2B and 52 RBI I am so looking forward to watching this kid play! The whole season he has hit for a .362 average, 25 homers, 34 doubles, and 100 RBIs.

As of midnight on Sept 1st the roster for the major league teams expands to 40 players. Anytime from now on players are eligible to be called up. This change does not affect the clubs 40 man rosters however so players called up must be on the 40 man roster, either to begin with or be placed on it. Also, the playoff roster (of 25) will be due soon.
