Question:

When do they tell residents to evacuate?

I just moved to the Mississippi coast (husband is military) and was wondering when they tell residents to evacuate. They've already told residents that are special needs, living in mobile homes or in FEMA trailers to evacuate due to Gustav but I was wondering how much time they normally give the other residents.

  1. Were you on this planet during Katrina?  GET OUT NOW.

Gas up, get water and food, and go.  You may not get notified, you may get notified late, roads may be blocked.  People ended up on their roofs for days - and what's been built back in New Orleans isn't even as good as what they had before.

  2. i live in a hurricane area in virginia so i know what you're going through.  prepare your home as you should but prepare your car also and be prepared to evac at any minute.  have your car loaded with everything you want/need to take in case the evac notice comes.  they give you a day usually but the traffic will be awful.  make sure you have emergency supplies in your car for your family.  you don't know how long you'll have to be on the road.

    good luck and stay dry

  3. The first people told to leave usually know that they live in a traditional evacuation zone, like those in trailer parks.  Check to see if your in one of those zones.   My advice;  Ask your neighbors, they have experience with this & can advise you on what to do & where to go.

.....& try to relax,   until we have more information on where it is going.

  4. They say Gustav will hit landfall sometime Tuesday morning. Start getting ready now. supplies will disappear overnight when everyone starts to evacuate. You have already been declared a disaster area by the Governor, so time's wasting. Get your car filled up with gas, food water, batteries, medications that you need, etc. Don't wait until the last moment, or you'll be sitting on the roof waiting to be rescued.

  5. They usually get told to evacuate at least 2 days before the eye of the storm hits, starting with the parishes or counties most in danger.
