When do we use WHEN + GERUND ?

is it wrong to use expressions like When, Every Time etc + verb- ing?

i've never been taught that at English school? Is it just slang or does it have a meaning?

    When walking the dog, one should not run.;-)

    1)

    it's not slang at all

    you can tell it's correct when you can put it anywhere else in the sentence and it still makes sense.

    ex. WHEN COUGHING, one should cover his/her mouth.

          One should cover his/her mouth WHEN COUGHING.
