When do you call a person modern?

when not? is it synonymous with fashion, with fads, with lavish and luxurious lifestyle?does modern have any relation to education?knowledge?exposure?

When husband and wife don't kiss each other good morning and good night but both pick up their cell phones in order to do so.. then they must be as modern as robots.. and their house is filled with the most complicated gadget.. which is like a maze going for a visit.. when you are their guest and you don't even know how to flush the toilet because you have to hit a blue light beam that nobody told you about... xx then they are too darn modern.. xx
