When do you have to decide what to specialise in for medicine?

  1. dcowley is misinformed about the US.

    The 4th year of medical school is when one decides, typically. This is because a new doc needs to apply to residency programs specific to the specialty.


  2. Depends on the country:

    UK=You do two foundation years, after that you apply for Specialty Registrar posts. So two years after university.

    Probably Wrong:

    USA=You do the year long internship, then do your Residency in  a specialty, so one year after medical school.

    If you are not UK or USA, then sorry i have probably been absolutely no help at all.

    edit: Sorry, that was a mistake, i got slightly confused. I'm not quite as knowledgeable about the American way. I thought it was similar to UK but apparently not.
