i have always wondered if you have to stay on in school till your 18 in america. over here in the uk you only have to stay in school till your 16 then you can either leave altogether, stay and do your A level exams or go to college and do an apprentiship in something such as hairdressing or beauty therapy or mechanics. Do you get a choice like that in the states?

  1. Most people stay in high school until they graduate. The last year is called 12th grade. People are usually 17 or 18 at this time. After high school some people get jobs. Others go to community or junior college which are colleges that offer two year degrees or offer two years as a stepping stone as these colleges are usually close to home before going to college or university. A lot of students go to college or university which offers 4 year degrees called a bachelors then 2 to 3 year degrees called masters and then 2-3 year professor or doctorate degrees.

  2. In most states you can legally leave school at 16.  It's probably better to graduate high school if you want to go into a training program.  Apprenticing in a trade generally requires that you be related to to someone in that trade.

  3. We go to school until we're in 12th grade, which most people are 17-18 when they are in 12th grade. After 12th grade, assuming that we pass, we graduate. After graduation we go out and we're free to do whatever we please. We can either go to college that we apply for beforehand, or we go to community college, or just leave altogether. I don't know what A level exams are, but our school system sounds somewhat like yours.
