You don't need a passport until summer of 2008, but I just came to the US from Mexico through Laredo, TX and it was a pain because I didn't have my passport. They still let you through as long as you have a Birth Certificate and a Government issued ID. I recommend getting it asap. I applied for mine on December 3rd, expedited it and got it on December 12. You have to pay an extra 60 dollars, but its worth it because they can take 6-8 weeks.

Are you in Mexico now? You can go to the US Embassy in Mexico, apply for a passport as long as you have your birth certificate. They might ask you for the following things: A picture of your mother while she was pregnant with you, baby pictures of you, tax records from the year you were born, a copy of the hospital bill the year you were born, your crib bracelet from the hospital, a baptism certificate. I thought this was ridiculous, so I came to the US to get my passport and my sons.

Just remember, if you do walk through the border, I saw the line ( I took a taxi) it could take up to 12 hours. There are huge lines for people crossing by foot. It would be easier to take a taxi, I paid 75 dollars and they took me straight to the airport on the Texas side. It was worth it! Good luck!

Passports are needed NOW to FLY to and from Mexico, but they willnot be needed for LAND and SEA travel until after SUMMER 2008.  See website below and read top half of the page for the CURRENT info.
