  1. it differs for everybody, i think my spacers were in for a minimum of one week, maybe two weeks tops, before i got a pallet expander for like a month. then it was braces (lasted 18 months?) and then clear plastic retainers, which i wore 24/7 for the first week, like i was supposed to, but then i gave up on that and just wore them when i was sleeping.

the spacers did hurt kind of a lot, but not when they were being put in. they hurt for a day or so after, made it hard to eat tough foods (steak, apples, etc) and a dull, occaisional ache for a few days after that.

what i reccomend is, immediately after getting the spacers put in, go find some fast food and eat a really big hamburger. i ate a big mac after every new thing put in my mouth (spacers, pallet expander, new wires on the braces)....and trust me, youll want that food because the first half hour/hour after something gets put in it doesnt hurt very much.

but definitely invest in some high-strength tylenol or ibuprofen or something, especially if its the 4-6 hour doses, so you can take them more often to get the renewed pain-fighting-power quickly.

EDIT: ah, also....dont try to grin and show off your new braces, it sort of looks like a retarded grimace. people will be able to see them when youre talking, dont try making any funny faces :)

and i know they're a huge (metaphorical) pain, and it may seem like your social life/your appearances will be ruined, but you will feel absolutely AMAZING when they come off. i know i did, it was a huge confidence boost that i knew my teeth were so straight. and having braces taught me to take good care of my teeth and brush regularly, so they look MUCH better now.

  2. you put wax on your braces every time like they hurt or rub against your mouth. you just take a tiny bit off and put it on the part that hurts. Spacers didn't really hurt me. My spacers were i my mouth for 2 weeks. Hope it helped.

  3. You only put wax on the brackets or wires if they're irritating your gums. They'll tell you if you need spacers. Yes they hurt like bloody h**l. I lost probably 15 pounds that week. You won't be able to eat anything hard. I had lots and lots of oatmeal and rice that week. I had mine for a week...It depends on how much space needs to be made.

  4. I had spacers in for a week. I do believe they are mandatory, though one of mine wouldm't stay in. For me, they hurt terribly bad and having the braces put on only caused minor pain. For friends, the opposite happened.

Wax is to prevent irritation, scratches, and such. You just break a piece off and stick it on. Your orthodontist should explain all of this.

I won't sugar coat it; braces are no picnic, but just think about how furtunate you are to be getting them. Some are not able to afford them.

In the end your smile will be beautiful, and the pain will forgotten. Best of luck!

  5. Spacers hurt my mouth, but my teeth were kinda crowded. Everyone is differnet, so they may or may not. They were in my mouth for about a week, maybe 2.

For wax, you just take a small piece, and stick it to any bracket, or poking wire that is bugging you. I don't usually use wax, unless it is pretty bad. Its simple, and they will go over once you get them on.

You say you will need rubberbands, but you will probably need more than that. I had an overbite as well, and have had them for 1 1/2 years so far, and still not to the rubberband phase. The rubber bands are the last thing, and used to correct the way you bite after your teeth are straight.

    Just to let you know.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!!!-------d:^)

  6. wax is only to put over the bracket if it cuts you to reduce irritaion so it can heal. spacers dont hurt at al and rubber bands dont either, but are really sore for the first few days until you adjust they wont stay long maybe like 2 or 3 weeks. And dont be scared, the end result is worth every moment of little discomfots along the way.
