My three year old is finally starting to potty train, and have no idea when I should start teaching him to stand when he goes.

  1. I would honestly say about four. My two-year-old brother will have to learn soon! He sits down but...Watch out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of his 'privacy' hangs out. Don't do it now. Wait until he fully gets a hang of it, and he is old enough to fully understand.

  2. I trust you're talking about him doing "number one" standing up and not "dropping a deuce". My wife and I used the rule that when he was tall enough to pee in the bowl while standing up he was ready to start learning. No tippy toes either, you'll be cleaning up a mess. But Mother Nature being the wonder that she is, he knew how to whiz standing up outside as soon as he learned he had to hang on to it. He even knew to give it a couple of shakes.

  3. Let him do what he is comfortable with until he is ready to stand. Also if there is a male figure around, try to get him to go potty with him , that worked for my son!!!

  4. My son started peeing standing up as soon as he could walk, he watched his father and just copied him.

  5. My almost-7-year-old still hasn't learned to stand at the potty.  We don't see a need.  Both my husband and my son sit when at home to keep mess to a minimum.  When in a public restroom, my son just goes in the stall.  I definitely wouldn't teach a 3-year-old to stand; that just seems to be asking for trouble!

  6. My son has been fully trained for 4 months now. Up until last month he just started standing. We were on a bike ride and he said he had to go potty. Of course we did not have the potty chair with us. I told him he would have to stand like daddy to pee, he said OK and just did it. He has been doing it ever since.  Get him fully trained first and to the point where he is having no more accidents. Then keep on asking him if he want to stand like daddy to go potty like a big boy.  Make sure he sees daddy going pee so he can get the idea. Hope this helps :)

  7. well lucky  my oldest was 2 1/2 when he potty trained and began standing at the same time.... my youngest is now 2 1/2 and is working very hard at potty training and doing a pretty good job....

By the way... Walmart carries potty urinals for about $35 if you'd rather teach him that way

  8. Wait a second...you mean...we can go STANDING UP!?!?  Whoa...that would be so much easier!!!

Okay, seriously - I'd say around age 4 or 5.  A good trick is to throw a cracker in the bowl, and give him a treat (after he's done, and washed his hands, of course) if he can hit it.

  9. Ahh, memories! I had my boys standing right away because they'd pee right outta the potty if they sat on it! Just stand him so he's leaning up on the potty, and tell him to make sure he's pointing inside!

  10. My oldest learned, my other boys  learned from him. About that age....

When he finally learns this, get ready for a lot of mess!!

They tend to "miss the basket", either playing, or not paying attention. This seams to never go away either.

    I wish they never learned!

  11. Hummm... Well I taught my son around 3 but he started using the "potty" when he was 2... I'd say as soon as you can. My son felt more open to his father.

    good luck... :-)
