  1. I really think you should read the excellent book "The Case for Mars" by Dr. Robert Zubrin, PhD. This book will discuss all answers to your questions in great detail. Realistically, NASA plans to return to the Moon in ~2018, mainly to try out the hardware and logistics for a Mars mission perhaps 6-10 years later. Verner Von Braun said we could put humans on Mars by 1980 if we had the same funding support as the Apollo project.

  2. 20 years we will be doing it

  3. It is POSSIBLE right now, no one wants to fund it though.  Humans are capable of withstanding the long voyage with proper training and exercise on the spacecraft.  Current technology is more than advanced enough to get people there in a reasonable amount of time as well.  It is just a problem of cost and people don't see the benefit of going to Mars right now.

  4. That would be in the past.

Viking 1 was launched on August 20, 1975 and arrived at Mars on June 19, 1976.

You want humans there?  We have to solve these problems: Radiation en route.  Radiation once we get there.  Generating breathable air there.  Growing things to eat en route and once there.  Artificial gravity.

Oddly, artificial gravity is the easiest of these problems.  Just spin the spacecraft as in the movie 2001.  You might think growing things is easy, but Biosphere 2 failed.  This needs to be demonstrated.

I'd say we could be there around 2040.  I might live that long.

  5. Depends on funding... lol always dose doesn't it.

We are planned to get back to the moon by 2019... but I don't see that with current NASA funding. Maybe if they start throwing cash NASA's way we will get there by this date. If they start putting in the GDP percentages they did during the Apollo days I bet we could get there by then and be well on our way to Mars with 5 to ten years later. The way it looks now I would say never, but from what it seems NASA is expecting from Congress I would say we will be there by 2035 at the earliest.

  6. the only thing thats keeping us from mars is cost and the muscle degeneration from zero gravity plus a crew determined to spend a year or two in space.

  7. Just a guesstamite, but if we were all serious about it I would dare to say between 2020 and 2030. Seems doable again, if we were serious about it and had an actual reason other than to just have people step on the Martian terrain.
