Summer is the dead period for the East Coast.  Obviously you are going to get a few decent swells roll through but it doesn't really pick back up until August through November.  Hurricane/storm season always brings the most consistent conditions.  

The Kitty Hawk/Nags Head area is roughly 5 hrs. from Wilmington.

btw - moros, you have no clue what you are talking about.  There have not been any unprovoked shark attacks in NC this year.

Well, if you don't have a wet suit then summer's probably the best time. Whenever there's a swell thats a good time. Hurricane season's awesome! Check the report before you go. And Wilmington's about 5 hours away.

First things first. Wilmington is about 200 miles from Cape Hatteras, if you take the ferry. If you go by land, it's closer to 300 miles. Check out a map, there is only one way onto the Outer Banks below Kitty Hawk.

The east coast is always at its worst in the summer, but both the Outer banks and Wilmington have more rideable days than not. When I was stationed in Virginia, I used to go to Hatteras & Nags Head many summer weekends, and it was almost always fun. Fall and winter and even Spring are certainly better, but the water is significantly colder. Not as cold as New Jersey of Delaware, but ten degrees colder than South Carolina. Hurricane season can be spectacular, if you are in the right place at the right time.
