  1. 1 wood is anywhere from 5 to 12 degrees. # wood 13 to 16 and 5 wood is 18 to 20. You usually tee off with the 1 wood on par 4's and 5's. 3 woods and 5 woods can be hit off the fairway. (sometimes referred to as fairway woods or fairway metals)

  2. I tee off with the three wood (eventhough its made of titanium) anytime there is trouble in driver range (250 to 260yds).  Or a dog leg that I may run out of fairway on.  From the fairway I hit three wood anytime I am more than 225 yds away.  I don't carry any other woods.

  3. Off the tee, whenever I can. More accurate than driver. Fact.

  4. Alright... the difference between a driver (1 wood), 3 wood, and a 5 wood is just the same as the difference between say, a 5-iron and an 8-iron. Different lofts lead to different distances. A higher loft will lead to a higher trajectory and shorter distance. That being said, a driver is your lowest lofted club, and therefore should be your longest club. A driver's loft can be anywhere from 8* to 12* or so.. The typical driver loft is 10.5*. A 3-wood's loft is normally about 15-18*, and a 5-wood will be between 20-22*.

  5. The 3 wood is quite popular amongst amateurs as it be used use for tee-offs on a short dogleg PAR 4 hole, on a long PAR 3 hole as well as on the fairways on a PAR 5 hole.

The driver is about the most difficult club to use, especially those with lofts of 10 degrees and below. It is also the longest club (as long as 45")in the bag, therefore the margin for making errors when hitting a shot with a driver is very small. One really needs to master the skills required to hit with a driver.

  6. The driver and 1 wood are synonymous. All three can be used off the tee. For beginners, I suggest teeing off with a 3 or 5 wood. The ball is easier to hit with these two clubs than it is to hit with a driver. The driver is also the longest club in the bag and that is why it is harder to hit with. There is more distance between you and the ball with the driver.

The 3 and 5 woods can also be used in the fairway, but again for the beginner, I would suggest using an iron. Irons are easier to hit than woods and you are less likely to damage an iron than a wood when hitting off the ground.

  7. I use a 3-wood instead of a driver whenever I'm having an off day driving, so I use the 3-wood so I'm not all over the place.  Even though the least lofted club is the most accurate in the bag (putter).
