This is probably a question I should ask my manager, but I just started this job that sells shoes and stuff(Im 16), and I was wondering on average how long after you start does it take to get your first pay check? The only reason Im asking is because I know when you first get a job it takes awhile before you get your first pay check. I started last week.

  1. It depends on the policy of the company.  Many employers hold back the first check, and you would get that one on the second pay date.  You'd be one pay period behind.

My company doesn't do that.  I work for the biggest bank in the US.  We get paid on the 15th and the last day of the month, starting with the first pay period in which you worked.

My son started a new job on June 24, gets paid weekly, and will get his first check tomorrow.  Friday is pay day, but it's a holiday so he'll be paid the day before.

Your manager is the best source of information, and actually, this should have been made clear to you when you signed you documentation.  You have a right to know, so go ahead and ask him.

  2. 2 weeks

  3. It depends on a few small circumstances.

    1. How long is the pay period, weekly, or bi-weekly?

    2. Did you start the job in the middle of the current pay period, at the beginning of the pay period, or at the end of the current pay period?

    3. How many initial weeks of pay does the employer withhold, one week or two?

If you started last week, at the beginning of the pay period, and the pay period is bi-weekly, and the employer only witholds the first week of pay, you should get your first paycheck for your first week of work at the end of next week.

If the pay period is weekly, and the employer only witholds the first weeks pay, you should get a paycheck next week also for your first week of work.

If the pay period is bi-weekly, and you started at the beginning of the pay period and the employer witholds only one week of pay, you should get a paycheck next week also, but for only the first week of work.

If the pay period is bi-weekly and you started in the middle of the pay period, you won't get paid untill the end of the next pay period, but should get paid for two weeks of work, because the first week of work will be witheld.

If the pay period is bi-weekly and you started at the end of the pay period and the employer witholds the first week of work, you will get paid at the end of the next pay period for two weeks of work.

I know it sounds confusing, and it is, your best answer will come from your employer. You should ask your manager.

  4. When I started my job the next pay period was 13 days later, so I did not get into that payroll. I had to wait another two weeks after that, so almost a month.
