When does a child learn alphabets and number?

My son is 20 months old and I don't want to get big headed or think that I have given birth to the next genius, but I was just curious on the age that some of your children started "KNOWING" their letters and numbers. Dezmond is 20 months, as I stated before, and he knows his alphabets, can point them out in a book, poster, billboard, anything. He even knows some basic words, like apple, elephant, and ball. You know just the basic words, he's not saying "electroencephalograph". But I think he's doing pretty good and may be ahead of the power curve right now. Because I thought the average age of learning all that was around 3. Correct me if I am wrong. I was just curious on when your kids started showing their signs of genius, lol.

I think 3 is average. However, I also think the amount of time the parents put into working with children, can help them pick up a huge amount early. Your son is a great example of this. Sounds like he's a bright little guy with a mom that cares enough to really start teaching and working with them at a young age.

Good for you! You are obviously spending time teaching him these things!  I know a lot of 3 year olds who are just learning these basic skills.  As for my daughter, she started at about 24 mos.  But again because i spent time with her and helped her with fun educational activities.

Again, what a good job you are doing! keep it up and your son will go far!

It depends on how soon they are being taught!  I was just hearing of a 19 month old who know it's letter and colors, so if the parents or care givers start teaching them early they learn early.  Keep up the great work with your Son, he's doing wonderful, and so have you!

Age 4 should be right to start off: earlier than that, would be invading into their play-age!

my neice is 2 and shes pretty good with her alphabet and stuff it sounds liek about the right time

Usually a child starts learning when there is a good teacher around. since people say that "a mother is the first and the best teacher".

so,if u r around and u start teachin him with love n care he ll become a genius very soon!!
