Question:

When does an airbag need to deploy?

In order to avoid being hit by a car that ran a red light I swerved to the right, lost control of my car, jumped the median and finally ended up hitting a post...and still my airbag did not deploy. Is this normal? Is there a neutral agency that can check the air bag for me or should I just have to trust the local dealership. Thanks.

  1. Well several yrs ago my husband wrecked a 1990 ?? 2. Airbags deploy only when they might be needed to prevent serious injury.

Frontal driver and passenger airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal crashes equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph.

Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts.

Thresholds of 10-12 mph typically are used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.

  3. There are certain criterias and variables that have to be met for airbags to deploy in different types of accidents, it must of decided that at the type of impact , the g-force and your speed didnt need to deploy the airbags
