I'm trying to find out when the Canadian ski season officially starts. I've heard it's earlier than the European season.

When do the resorts officially open for the ski season?

  1. It depends a lot on the amount of snowfall, but generally I would say by the end of the first week in December.  In the interior of the Rockies, if the amount of snowfall is normal, I think they try to be open by the beginning of December.  The trails might not be as worked down as later on after more traffic has arrived.  The higher the altitude the sooner they tend to open because the snowfall is greater.  For example, Sunshine Village at Banff might be open a bit earlier and closed a bit later (beginning of May) than Lake Louise in the same area because it probably has more snow.  However, the trails are not as long because the base of the resort is higher up.

You could maybe try looking a fgew up on the Internet and visiting the individual sites.

It is hard to comment about the resorts in Quebec because the altitude is lower and the snow tends to be wetter and heavier.

  2. The ski season in Canada starts when the snow flies in the mountains.  Whistler Blackcomb is usually in November, sometimes earlier, it ends in July or August.

I'm not sure about Banff, Lake Louise.

Mt Hood in Oregon, USA  Starts in November and ends in August, all depend on the snow storms. Few areas will operate all facilities on the ends of the season, most of that time is for training of  staff and racers, the public will not really enjoy the limited number of runs and continuous high speed skiers on the hill.
