When does the blackberry get registered?

Question

i just bought a blackberry curve 8310

and in the phone it has a message saying it was succesfully registered

even before i bought the phone

Was the phone used before i bought it?

It says that it is registered as soon as you use the phone, and or when you reboot it (take battery off, resync etc).  

It registers it in the blackberry network, that is all it means.
