When does the dealer pay out for blackjack?

Okay, this is a simple blackjack question, and although I am an avid blackjack player I cannot seem to remember what is right in this situation.

If I were dealt a blackjack at the casino, and the dealer is showing a face card or a 10, what is the protocol? Does the dealer pay me 3:2 like normal before checking to see whether or not they have blackjack, or if the dealer also has blackjack is it a push? Thanks for all the info!

  1. The dealer always checks his hand before paying you. When both the dealer and the player have blackjack, it is a push. Most casinos check immediately after the cards are dealt, but some wait until everyone at the table has played their hand.

  2. Most casinos that I've been to only pay you off when your turn comes around.  So if you're sitting in the second seat, the first person would play their hand, then you would get paid.

If the dealer has a 10 or A showing, most casinos check for blackjack before any players play their hand.  In this case, if the dealer has a blackjack, then it is a push.

If the dealer has an Ace, you can take "even money", which is essentially making a max Insurance bet.

  3. In america, most casinos pay you immediately upon being dealt a blackjack unless the dealer is showing a ten or ace.  If that is the case they will first check for blackjacks if they do not have them they will pay you immediately after checking and continue with everyubody elses hands as normal afterward.  If the dealer checks for blackjack and has a blackjack he will immediately flip his/her cards and collect all of the bets on the table (except yours or any other blackjack hands) because it is a push.  If the dealer is showing an ace, you have a blackjack, blackjacks pay 3:2 and insurance pays 2:1 (which is the case for almost every game except those paying 6:5 for blackjacks) you will be offered the oportunity for even money befor the dealer checks for blackjack (you will get payed even money 1:1 before he checks for blackjack instead of 3:2 after he checks for blackjack and doesnt have it or a push if he checks and does have it)

Then theres casinos outside the us that sometimes do not check for blackjack untill the end of the hand (after all hits stands doubles splits etc, if this is the case you will get payed at the end as for a normal hand only you will get payed 3:2 instead of even money.

Thats how it works, kinda crazy eh?

    Some notes:

-Even money is the same as taking insurance only it skips the process, you could insure your hands for less than half your bet instead

-If you can take even money when blackjacks pay only 6:5 do so because it is to your advantage, they most likely arnt supposed to allow it, but mnay dealer probibly arnt aware since even money is such a common event, and they may forget what game they are dealing

-If the dealer does not check for blackjack untill after all hands are played out, it is disadvantageous to the player since he will now lose all splits and doubles if the dealer does in fact have blackjack.  This is known as the no peek rule

-When blackjacks pay 6:5 instead of 3:2 the hosue edge grows to three-four times what it is normally by over a full percent, combined with other sly rules you probibly arnt even aware of most single deck 6:5 blackjack games have 4 times the hosue edge of a conventional 8 deck game (that is why you keep losing when you play them)

  4. If the dealer shows a 10 and has blackjack it is a push. If the dealer shows an ace you can request even money.
