Question:

When does the post office NOT deliver mail?

I know the rules can be different in more rural areas, but when will the postal service cancel a regular route? We just got a foot of snow dumped on us overnight and still got our mail, which is pretty impressive.

Other than the obvious (simply not being able to traverse an area because a road has been distroyed), I wonder what would be considered too dangerous, difficult, or otherwise applicable not to deliver the mail...

  1. I've been a carrier for 28 years. Here are a few situations that will stop me from delivering

When a young person refuses to shovel their walk (I'll struggle thru freshly fallen snow...but if it's been a few days and you haven't shoveled....you just don't want the mail)

The elderly get their mail no matter how deep the snow is

It's cold and you are watering your lawn and the mailbox.

(I'm not gonna get soaked in 40 degree weather)

    Dangerous conditions

(Porch falling apart (One friend fell thru a porch...) construction on house, dog guarding mailbox)

  2. They won't deliver the mail after a postal worker goes on a shooting rampage.................

  3. They will always deliver mail to bill cosby, but dont mail him frazzle snazzle he gets that everyday

  4. Hurricanes, and tornadoes qualify as a day off for your local carrier.

  5. CERTAIN HOLIDAYS! AND SUNDAY!

  6. when the state declares a state of emergency, when the post office deams the roads unsafe (ice)

  7. sunday and holidays

  8. Yes, they deliver in the snow.  I think the exception might be a blizzard.  Also, if there are any loose dogs around that the letter carrier doesn't know or if the carrier feels threatened in any way, they do not have to deliver.  This is because, if they get hurt, the PO has to pay for it, and they don't want to have to pay medical bills.

  9. um sunday and holidays?

  10. Holidays and Sundays.

  11. when do the post office deliver mail?

  12. Sundays and Holidays, and anytime your mailbox is unreachable.  They will really try to deliver your mail if the weather is bad, although there are sometimes when it is impossible.  They don't want to let it stack up at the office.  Another instance which can prevent the delivery of mail is when the box is blocked, damaged or missing.  If the box is blocked, like a car is parked in front of it, the carrier might cut you some slack sometimes, but they aren't required to.

  13. Maybe during road construction or after some type of bad weather situation.

  14. Nothing.  Their motto is that they will deliver the mail through anything.

  15. In Maryland the post office delivers mail Monday through Saturday. No Sunday. The exceptions in the week are days like President's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial day, and President's birthdays. As you snow condition, the rule is is there is more than 3 feet of snow, no mail. But if they can not get by in their cars at less than 3 feet, then the Post Office will pay them more to walk the routes. (highly unlikely if you ask me.)

  16. weekend

  17. on sunday

  18. In the too dangerous area that you are asking about I would have to say, floods, forest fires, avalanche areas, earthquakes, that sort of thing.

  19. Sometimes icy walkways or a threatening dog in the yard will stop them.  I have also heard of one situation where they refused to deliver because the owners of the property didn't clean up after their dog - I totally understand that.  But they are special people.

  20. they don't deliver on Sundays

  21. they are closed on sundays, federal holidays, and sometimes when the roads are too bad for the plow trucks to deal with.

  22. If anyone would care to read your whole question, they might not answer Sundays and holidays. Anyway, I seem to remember right after the eye of Hurricane Charley went over our town in Florida a few years ago, the mail didn't come for several days or even weeks.. Of course, there were downed power lines, trees, and houses completely wiped off the map, mailboxes included.... They always seem to come when it snows here in NH too, if a bit late in the day. I agree, our postal system is pretty impressive.

  23. They are like super men and women, aren't they?

  24. sundays, holidays, and after 6pm
