Is it like the school year and starts in the middle of the year? Or does it start at the beginning? If I apply to a university now, is that for starting in 2008 or 2009?

  1. It starts in September (or sometimes October).

It depends where you want to apply. You've missed Oxbridge completely for 2008 entry - their closing date was last year. You've also missed the main date for all other universities for 2008 - you can still apply up to June 30th, but they may not consider you. Note that in the UK you don't apply direct to a university, you apply to a central organisation called UCAS.

  2. September
