A gymnast is running and performing their routine on the floor. When they go to leap or do a summersault or twist, I'm looking to see what method would improve height. Can they leap differently, place their foot a certain way. What might work to improve their routine?

  1. You have to get power from your round off, back handspring, front handspring, ect. Then you have to jump off the ground as hard as you can throwing your arms and staying tight.

  2. There are many issues that can affect a gymnast's floor routine. To start, every floor is different. Although all of them are spring loaded, some give a little more "bounce" than others. Another major contributor is the strength and weight of the gymnast. A 10 yr old weighing 70lbs. is not going to produce as much power at a 16 yr old weighing 110lbs. (generally speaking). Technique will have a lot to do with it as well. This is an extreme simplifiaction, but if you are tumbling and you set up for your back tuck with your feet in front of your body, you will "set" straight up, giving you more height. It really takes training with an instructor to understand how any of this really works.
