When doing drop spins for color guard how do you keep the silk from wrapping up around the flag?

it's all in the thumb.when the flag is up,your thumbs are up.when the flag is down,your thumbs are down.just place your bottom thumb like an inch into the silk. anything in guard takes practice! i've been doing it for 6 years!
